Money is one of the most important issues that affect a Christian’s life. In fact money is an issue that affects all human beings on earth regardless whether they are religious or not. People rise up in the morning and go to work and do business. They literally spend most of their working hours working for money. They are either thinking of how to make money or how to spend money. Money has helped to build hospitals, feed the hungry, send peace keeping missions to war torn areas, rebuild natural disaster struck areas. Money has helped print Bibles, build churches, send out missionaries, print Christian books and broadcast Christian radio and television programs.
On the other hand people have stolen and killed for money, they have sold drugs and guns for money. They have even sold themselves or other human beings for money. Wars have erupted because of money. Untold evils have been committed all for the sake of money.
Yet in all this, what does the Bible as God’s word have to say about money? Paul does clearly state that ‘the love of money is the root of all evil’ (1 Timothy 6:9-10). Jesus did teach that trusting in and being in servitude to money can choke God’s word in people and make it difficult for them to enter into the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:24, Mark 10:23-24).
Yet God gave to Abraham (Genesis 13:2), Isaac (Genesis 26:12-15) and Solomon (1 Kings 3:13), an abundance of wealth. Paul again states that God is able to make all grace abound to you that having all sufficiency in all things you may abound to every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8). Joseph of Arimathea though very rich yet was a disciple of Jesus Christ (Matthew 27:57).
We thus shall seek on this weekly column to look deeply and as clearly as possible into what the Bible has to say on money matters. It is our belief that the insights that will be given in this column will help you to gain Biblical financial wisdom and transform your financial life.
